QUESTION: I’m 43, fit and all, but about 6 months ago I started to have BPH issues. I’m concerned that this might lead to a more serious problem. You know the big C? So any insights about an enlarged prostate would be welcome.
I hear that. Many living with enlarged prostates have been equally concerned. Mistakenly thinking the road leads to cancer. Not to mention the uncertainty of not knowing and what your mind can do with that.
But we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. Why don’t we see if we can’t delve deeper and learn more about this unwelcome gate crasher. Looking at four ideas that might make you feel better.
BPH is short of “benign prostatic hyperplasia” or an enlarged prostate. I’m sure you see why guys go with BPH. This is a common problem that strikes about 25% of those how have passed the big 5-0. And more and more as time marches on. But it can also start to make the scene annoyingly sooner as the person asking the question here has found out.
The biggest thing is when your prostate swells it can cause problems in the bathroom. As well as make you get up to tend to business several times a night as you sleepily make multiple visits to the bathroom.
While it’s inconvenient, you shouldn’t take an enlarged prostate gland as a cancer red flag. It’s not. That fact should ease the tension and any fears you’ve got.
Nor does it mean you will end up with cancer. There’s insight number two.
Yet you’re right. Some of those with BPH will fall victim to cancer. But most will not. Then too some with cancer of the prostate will have to deal with BPH at the same time. But again most will not. Unfortunate for those dealing with both, but it does happen.
Still the third take away bit of good news here is there is nothing to indicate BPH can “turn into” prostate cancer.
But we’re not out of the woods yet because they symptoms of a swollen prostate and prostate cancer are often quite similar. This is why you need a trained medical professional to gather your symptoms, evaluate them and come up with the correct diagnosis. Advising proper medication or other remedies and treatments alternatives.
And yes that likely will involve “the glove” and bending over and such. And it’s only natural to try to avoid all that. But what’s a bit of discomfort or unpleasantness if it lets you put aside the agonizing not knowing stuff, right?
Just remember that an enlarged prostate is not cancer serious but still should be taken seriously. The problems it can lead to include urinary tract infection, problems with bladder malfunction and who can forget increased risk of prostatitis. The causes of which are no one’s fault really. But being able to avoid them would be good.
So why delay? Why put off visiting your doctor to get a grip on this? If it helps think of this way. Treatment starts the moment the glove comes off.
Yet the fourth idea here is not to conclude treatment equals the hassle of surgery.
Hope my two cents’ worth has enhanced your understanding of your BPH or enlarged prostate situation.
