Appears the male segment of the population thinks its immortal. Either that or they have a death wish. Because by and large men are guilty of a variety of deadly health sins that all but assure an early grave. A serious disconnect to be sure. If you’re curious here are some things to do and/or avoid that can give you a leg up on a longer, healthier life at least.

Treating Sleep as Optional Not a good move. Yes pulling all nighters may have been necessary in college at times but not getting enough sleep now can be very detrimental to your well being. Studies show that too little sleep is bad for both your health and your looks. (As in when was the last time someone complimented you on those bags under your eyes?) It affects your mental prowess, not in a good way, and can contribute to weight gain too.

Is It the White Coat? Ducking a visit to the doctor each year isn’t a winning plan either. Even though some guys avoid it unless a limb has been severed. Perhaps it is a no news is good news thing. Not sure. But this approach shows a willingness to ignore the rule that says medical problems are best found sooner than later. All the more true about things like your heart or prostate.

No Beef For Me We know red meat isn’t the greatest thing to eat but some look at downing a huge slab of it as a badge of courage or something. But ponder two words for a second. Fat. Cholesterol. If you can feel your arteries clogging at the mere sight of the plate you have to know that’s not good. And this doesn’t even consider what charred meat does to your colon. Or that fact that toxins may be lurking in the fat. Chicken, fish or turkey would be a better choice.

No Time to Eat Breakfast? Yeah afraid to say it but Mom was right. Skipping breakfast isn’t smart. But with rush hour traffic or the need to get to the job early it may still seem like an almost good idea. Emphasis on almost. Because surely you’ve got time for a bowl of cereal at least to help you shine until lunch, don’t you?

Don’t Get Overexposed. To the sun. What did you think I was getting at? Sure that fresh from the beach tan makes your friends envious and turns heads but think about all those needless ultraviolet rays you’re exposing yourself to. Skin cancer is nothing to play with. So why tempt fate? That fresh from the igloo look may be rather pasty, but it is healthier.

Kick the Habit. Since you were looking for this one anyway I didn’t want to disappoint. But as they say smoking it the most preventable cause of premature death going. Right up there on the list of causes of heart failure and high blood pressure. That aside it’s just a stinky habit. One that’s best not even picked up to begin with.

Obviously it’s your choice how you live and what you do for your health. Offering cures is easy but prevention is a harder sell. Still you’d be wise to heed these suggestions. Because sooner or later it all catches up to you. And you want it to be later. Much later, right?
